Hello!

I'm a Los Angeles-based freelance journalist with a professional background in architectural history and historic preservation. I was born in Dallas and raised in the heart of Los Angeles by parents with New York City roots, a combo that made for a particularly great geographical and cultural mix. (Shalom, y'all.)

I have a B.A. in Art History and American Studies from Wesleyan University in Connecticut, and an M.A. in Urban Planning from UCLA. Because I’ve been fortunate enough to study, reside, and travel outside of Southern California, moving my family to live back on the very block where I grew up wasn’t entirely weird.

An incurable generalist, I contribute to a range of print and digital media outlets, mostly covering design, culture, food, and travel, as well as whatever else I can learn about while dragging along my two kids and TV writer/producer husband. (Peek at my Muck Rack profile to see the most recent pieces I haven’t yet posted here.) Whether it’s digging into a textile designer’s process or unpacking the enduring appeal of a specific dessert, I love sharing stories about creatives making compelling work in all mediums that shape culture and experiences.

I tend to introduce myself as “Jessica” and then soon become “Jess” to folks who know me. Jessica/Jess/Jessie-related nickname muddling (as well as the occasional “Jennifer” slip-up) has always and will continue to be confusing. Anyway, feel free to get in touch! jess@jessnritz.com
